The Dutch Applied Scientific Research Organization has collaborated with several companies in the Netherlands to propose a novel method to collect solar energy for the installation of a solar bicycle path named SolaRoad. This method can not only encourage people to use non-emission vehicles, but also help collect solar energy.
This bicycle lane consists of 1.5-by-2.5-meter cement blocks covered with crystalline silicon solar cells. The battery is covered with a protective glass layer that allows sunlight to pass through. At present, such bicycle lanes are still in the research and development stage. There are still many problems to be solved. For example, the road surface should be strong enough to ensure continuous traffic flow, and at the same time, it must collect solar energy effectively.
If these problems can be solved and roads can be laid smoothly, the collected solar energy will be used for street lighting, traffic lights and even household products. It is reported that this bicycle lane will be laid in the city of Cromerni near Amsterdam.
