However, this depth is too deep for current drilling techniques. This finding was made using seismic activity data, which revealed that the actual propagation speed of sound waves through this configuration was much faster than expected.

The study, detailed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explained that seismic activity data collected by agencies such as the US Geological Survey (USGS) primarily involved sound waves passing through the Earth. Using these data, especially the speed at which sound waves travel through the rock, scientists can piece together the concepts inside the Earth. A variety of things can affect sound waves, such as the density and temperature of rocks.

Using seismic data, scientists have noticed that sound waves pass through the ancient Craton roots more than expected. These cratonic roots are shaped like inverted mountain cones, located below the center of many continental tectonic plates.

The researchers pointed out that although sound waves travel faster in craton than denser, higher temperature mantles, the data suggests that the speed is faster than expected. The researchers created a virtual model of the structure and used different mineral components to discover which could interpret the sonic data. The composition containing 1% to 2% of diamonds meets the requirements; if calculated according to the total volume of the Earth Cratongen, the total amount of diamonds may reach 1 trillion tons.

Ulrich Faul, a scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said of the study:

This suggests that diamonds may not be such a peculiar mineral, which is relatively common on a geological scale. We are temporarily unable to obtain them, but the diamond reserves are still much more than we expected.
