Allegherny Technologies has successfully researched and developed a new high-strength titanium alloy ATI425 . This new type of titanium alloy is an innovative high-strength alloy that is comparable in strength to Ti-6-4 alloy and has the advantage of being able to be cold worked. This new type of titanium alloy was developed for the purpose of processing armored armor plates. It has been found during processing that it has special thermal processing properties, and further tests have observed the versatility of the ATI 425 alloy. ATI 425 titanium alloys are produced by Allegheny Technologies' Wah Chag Company and Ludlum Corporation. The product range is diverse, including thin plates, coils, strips, finish-rolled strips, medium-thickness plates, and seamless tubes .
The ATI425 alloy is an alpha-beta alloy that uses iron instead of higher cost vanadium as a beta stabilizer. Although this alloy is a high-strength alloy, one of its advantages is that the alloy is relatively easy to cold-work, whereas Ti-6-4 is not processable at cold temperatures. The cold-rolled and annealed ATI 425 titanium alloy sheet bends at an angle of 105o , and its bending performance is good. The ductility of the alloy makes the processing easier. Tests have shown that at a temperature of 830 °C to 900 °C, the superplasticity and formability ( SPF) at a strain rate of 3 × 10-4 seconds is similar to that of a Ti-6-4 SPF -grade titanium alloy sheet. .
ATI 425 titanium alloys can be hot worked and cold worked. When the annealed cold rolled sheet thickness of 0.001 inches thick, or 0.001 inches or less and a standard light plate thickness of 0.25 inches, 0.375 inches, which is good bending performance. In any case, the surface of the alloy sheet must be free of defects and cannot have an o surface.
The ATI 425 titanium alloy is easy to weld and can be welded using standard welding techniques. Its bending and ductility at the weld is better than that of Ti-6-4 titanium alloy. The corrosion resistance of ATI 425 titanium alloy is similar to that of Ti-6Ae-4V and Ti-3Ae -2.5V titanium alloys.
