New wearables use knee bending to generate electricity

Chinese researchers published a paper in the new issue of the American Journal of Applied Physics, saying that they have developed a power generation device that can be worn on the legs. When a person wearing this device walks at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour, the output power of the device is 1.6 microwatts. The researchers compared the breathing conditions of the subjects when they walked with and without the device, and believed that walking with the device did not require extra effort.

Previously, some wearable energy harvesting devices used vibration generated when people walked to generate electricity, with low efficiency. Liao Weixin said that people ’s walking frequency is very slow, and the efficiency of collecting energy from vibration is low, and the equipment developed this time uses the kinetic energy generated by knee bending to bypass this limitation.

Researchers believe that the new human kinetic energy collection technology is expected to promote the development of wearable devices, so that wearable health monitors and other "self-powered", users can get rid of the inconvenience caused by the need to charge frequently.
