Russian scientists have successfully developed new thin-film solar cell materials



The Russian President’s Economic Modernization and Innovation Development Committee released a news report that researchers from the Institute of Chemical Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences have successfully developed an efficient and stable thin-film solar cell based on organic semiconductor materials. The organic semiconductor material consists of a conjugated polymer and a derivative of fullerene. The research project was completed with the support of the Russian Science Foundation. The results were published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry, a scientific journal.

Russian researchers found in the study of the creation of novel conjugated polymers that the use of irregular copolymers, in which the monomer chains are arranged irregularly in the main chain, are more optoelectronic properties than the regular structure of the copolymers excellent. Based on this finding, the photoelectric conversion rate of the new organic thin-film solar cell developed by the research team exceeds 7% in practical applications, which is superior to many similar products. The new thin-film solar cell has low manufacturing cost and broad commercial application prospects.

The researchers conducted field tests on several organic thin-film solar cells obtained. The experimental sites were selected in Israel's Negev Desert.
