SunPower battery efficiency rushes to 25%

SunPower announced the fourth quarter 2016 revenue results and the latest technological developments. The company's Fab 4 in the Philippines has successfully used IBC battery technology to increase solar cell conversion efficiency to 25%, setting a new record in the industry.

SunPower personnel said in an online press conference that the Philippines-based Fab 4 uses N-type single-crystal IBC battery technology and will increase production capacity to 350MW in 2017. The Fab 4 plant's R & D results are also very impressive, the battery conversion efficiency has come up to 25%; SunPower IBC as the company's next-generation technology development, continue to lead the development of global technology.

Located in Malaysia, Fab 3 plant with a capacity of 800MW, SunPower plans to spend US$100 million this year to upgrade its battery production line to N-type single-crystal IBC battery technology, also known as the X-Series. Coupled with other upgrade and expansion requirements, SunPower estimates that capital expenditures in 2017 will reach US$120 million.

In the ongoing process of upgrading Fab 3 and Fab 4 plants, SunPower will continue to use the X-Series components as the main product, and strengthen the supply capability of P-Series components, while strengthening its market operations in China. The X-Series's capacity is expected to reach 350 MW by the end of this year.

The batteries required for the P-Series components are mainly purchased from outside and assembled at an assembly plant in Mexico. In the P-Seires series, 200MW multi-cut cells and direct cell-to-cell contact modules have been in volume production in the fourth quarter of last year; 200MW will be put into production.
