Paris, June 10th An ocean acidification research project was officially launched on the 10th in the city of Nice in southern France. The program is partially funded by the European Union. Scientists will conduct an in-depth analysis of ocean acidification and its impact on ecosystems and make recommendations for future environmental policies.
According to the French National Research Center participating in the project, in the past 200 years, the ocean has absorbed about 120 billion tons of carbon dioxide, accounting for about one-third of the total global carbon dioxide emissions during this period. A large amount of carbon dioxide dissolves in seawater and changes the chemical properties of the seawater, resulting in acidification of the originally alkaline seawater. However, this issue has not received widespread attention and research has only gradually begun since the end of the 20th century.
To this end, nine European countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and the Netherlands decided to conduct joint in-depth studies on seawater acidification and there will be 27 research teams involved. Scientists will monitor the chemical composition of seawater, assess the impact of the acidification process on the ecosystem, and the adaptation of planktonic plants and mollusks, and predict the course of ocean acidification by 2100 years.
The entire project is expected to take 4 years and cost 16.5 million euros, of which the EU will contribute 6.5 million euros.
