Scientists find new bacteria that can be used for water treatment

On June 3, Harbin Institute of Technology released information that Professor Li Weiguang’s school group at the school’s school adopted a low-temperature screening method and discovered a new type of heterotrophic nitrification bacteria that could grow at a low temperature of 2°C. According to the international nomenclature, the new strain is formally named "Harbin Immobilized Bacteria". This discovery has important theoretical and practical value for the development of new technologies for ammonia nitrogen treatment in low temperature source water.

The research was officially published in May this year in the internationally renowned journal "International System and Evolutionary Microbiology." Li Weiguang's research group systematically analyzed and identified the morphological characteristics, physiological and biochemical characteristics, enzymological characteristics, and molecular biological characteristics of the strain. The strain's gene sequence was compared with known strains of Acinetobacter and constructed. Phylogenetic tree. The gene sequence of this new strain is less than 85% similar to other known strains in the genus, and the strain's closest relationship with its phylogenetic relationship is 25.5%, confirming that it is a new species within Acinetobacter.

At present, ammonia water exceeds the standard in surface water sources in China, and water chlorine plants generally use liquid chlorine disinfection technology. The presence of ammonia in the water not only consumes large amounts of chlorine, but also increases the number of chlorination by-products that can affect water quality. It is difficult to remove ammonia nitrogen from existing conventional coagulation, sedimentation, and filtration processes in water supply plants. In addition, the water temperature in most regions of China is generally low in winter or spring and autumn. The traditional biological nitrification technology based on autotrophic nitrification bacteria is difficult to effectively remove ammonia nitrogen at low temperature. The application of this research result provides a new biological method that is different from the current chemical methods to solve the problem of ammonia nitrogen removal in low temperature source water.

In recent years, the research group has made a series of progresses in the removal of ammonia nitrogen in low-temperature source water using a heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria biological method. The research results have been published in the "Bioresource Technology" and "International Biodegradation and Biodegradation" periodicals. , And obtained two national patents for inventions.
