Shale physical properties

The hardness of shale is generally 1.5 to 3 hardness coefficient. The structure is relatively dense, and its hardness coefficient can reach 4~5. Some hard shale has higher hardness. The particle composition of the shale is related to its natural particle size and diagenesis, and the fluctuation of the particle composition is large, which affects other properties of the shale. The plasticity index of shale ranges from 5 to 23 depending on the sedimentation conditions during rock formation, and the plasticity index of some shale even exceeds this range. Therefore, some shale is actually not used as a raw material for sintered bricks.

The dryness sensitivity of shale raw materials is manifested in a variety of forms. It is usually measured by the drying sensitivity coefficient, which is generally in the range of 0.4-1.6. For some shale with very high plasticity, its drying sensitivity coefficient may be higher. The shrinkage rate of the dry line of shale varies greatly depending on the type, and the range varies from 2.5% to 10%.
