The Asahi Glass Company (AGC) has developed a fluorine-based electrolyte polymer for fuel cells, which is thinner and more flexible, and has more than 5 times the durability of the original electrolyte membrane.
When a fuel cell generates electricity, water is generated in the battery cells, the electrolyte membrane absorbs water and swells, and after power generation stops, it will dry and shrink. This process is repeated repeatedly, resulting in the application of complex mechanical stress to the electrolyte membrane, which eventually ruptures it and can no longer function as a separator.
Asahi Glass Company researched the chemical structure of the polymer and developed a new type of electrolyte polymer with better toughness, which can reduce and disperse the mechanical stress. Even if it is repeatedly deformed, it can maintain the three-dimensional microstructure and is not easy to deteriorate. Although this new type of electrolyte membrane is reduced to 5 microns in thickness, it still exhibits more than 5 times the dry-wet cycle durability of the original electrolyte membrane, successfully breaking the trade-off relationship between thinning and dry-wet cycle durability.
