It is reported that the research team started with a conventional aluminum plate and processed ultra-short femtosecond laser pulses to produce a deep black slotted surface.
This allows the material to have high absorption and "super-wicking" properties. Even if the aluminum plate is not completely submerged in water, it can resist a certain amount of gravity and draw a layer of water from the storage tank along the metal surface.
In this process, the black material can efficiently absorb and use solar energy to heat, and the etched wicking surface structure can then change the molecular bonds of water, thereby improving the efficiency of the evaporation process to remove contaminants.
