The German Research Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Energy (ZSW) in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, announced the development of a CIGS (copper-indium-gallium-selenium) thin-film solar cell with a conversion efficiency of 21.7%.
In early 2014, Midsummer of Sweden launched a thin film solar cell that was 0.7% more efficient than the world’s highest efficiency. Today, the honor of "world record creator" is back to the hands of ZSW researchers.
Michael Powalla, director of the ZSW Photovoltaic Division, said that compared to the typical conversion efficiency of crystalline silicon solar cells in the experiment, the CIGS battery efficiency developed this time increased by 1.3%.
“Our R&D progress has once again confirmed the great potential of CIGS thin-film photovoltaic technology.†Powalla said, “The data from this lab shows that there is still potential for further improvement in the conversion efficiency of CIGS cells in the future, which is expected to further reduce the cost of CIGS technology. ZSW pointed out that the solar cell has an area of ​​0.5 square centimeters (according to the test efficiency standard) and was developed through a co-evaporation process that has been confirmed to have high reproducibility under laboratory conditions. ZSW has now developed a battery that exceeds the 21% mark by more than 40 wafers, indicating that the process is suitable for large-scale mass production. The test results have been certified by the German Frauenhofer Solar Energy Center (ISE).

Powalla confirmed that this type of battery process is expected to be used in the production process in the next few years. In the next few years, the conversion efficiency of mass-produced batteries will be between 17% and 19%. At present, the CIGS cell conversion efficiency sold in the market does not exceed 15%, but the cost is rapidly declining and the efficiency is likely to increase.

It is reported that ZSW has agreed to establish a partnership with the German CIGS (copper & indium gallium selenide) solar thin film battery manufacturer Manz AG on the new CIGS thin film photovoltaic technology. Researchers are eager to "move" innovative processes out of the laboratory and into the factory.
