For CoroMill490, the new PVD coated grade GC1030 provides the primary tool material for the appropriate insert geometry and is the preferred choice for these materials. This grade is especially suitable for small diameter applications, unstable conditions, large tool overhangs, demanding tool in and out, and small tool knives, all of which are often encountered in square shoulder milling operations.
Depending on the specific nature of the cut, certain processes will inevitably require optimization. Due to the different characteristics of the grades, it may be more appropriate for the CVD coated grade to be more suitable than the PVD grade. Although the CVD grade is not as sharp as the PVD grade, it is still used in the CoroMill490, which provides higher cutting speeds and longer tool life. This is especially true in the process of tool diameters and large amounts of tooling and heat-related wear threatening the cutting edge. The GC4230 is a cutting speed optimizer for end mill applications. It is also a very durable universal insert grade, while the GC4240 is a very rugged steel milling grade. For this grade, cutting edge toughness is the decisive parameter.
Optimized with insert geometry
The square shoulder milling process usually uses a very moderate feed rate, which affects the production efficiency when the feed value directly affects the metal removal rate. Recent studies have shown that the vast majority of feed rates per tooth are below 0.12 mm. These feed values ​​are acceptable for the finishing process; however, they are somewhat inadequate for the current cost-effective general and roughing processes.
The CoroMill490 has been developed as a low-power tool that provides high metal removal rates (up to 0.22mm per tooth). At the same time, the tool is capable of high-precision finishing milling with a fine chip thickness (feedrates down to 0.05 mm per tooth). To optimize its wide range of applications, we offer 3 different insert geometries (L, M and H).
The H-slot shape is suitable for a series of large feed values ​​per tooth. This sturdy cutting edge is sufficient for heavy-duty cutting, including thick chips, which makes CoroMill490 a roughing tool for light cutting. The L-grooved insert transforms CoroMill490 into a powerful finishing tool that delivers a higher level of square shoulder milling quality, which is unique for indexable insert tools. The CoroMill 490 with M-blade geometry has universal capabilities, so on any CNC machine that has to mill various end faces, shoulders, edges or even grooves, it should occupy a prominent position in its tool chamber. The tooth feed range covers the general range in the middle. With a combination of possibilities, different blade geometries and grades, and variations in the feed of the milling tool per tooth, the CoroMill490 offers a wide range of applications and is the perfect alternative for improved machining performance.
Smaller depth of cut
Currently, smaller depths of cut are often required to machine parts in the shop, which is of course necessary to use most smaller machines. In contrast, the trend is higher feed rates and higher cutting speeds. Power limiting is also one of the factors, especially for ISO taper 40 and 30 machining centers and for most multi-tasking machines and turning centers. The higher speeds and feeds of today's machine tools also mean that smaller diameter (25 to 80 mm) tools can be used more efficiently and the shoulders and end faces are cut by repeated passes.
This background helps to set the direction for the new generation of shoulder milling cutters. The results show that the maximum depth of cut for CoroMill 490 is 5.5 mm and the recommended value is 4 mm. This provides an opportunity for the new tool concept to be equipped with a square insert and is the basis for high blade stability and good tool economy through precise and safe blade positioning. CoroMill490 has optimized the blade support points and placed them as far apart as possible along the edge of the seat, thus minimizing the effects of cutting forces, as this cutting force easily moves the blades on the seat.
