Improper use or installation of gas water heaters can cause personal injury or death, and electric water heaters without "grounding" protection can also cause tragedy. Recently, the China Consumers Association and the Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau have issued warnings to remind consumers to pay attention. Even if the purchased electric water heater is qualified, if the power supply environment has potential safety hazards, the power supply may not be effectively "grounded". Non-insulators such as water pipes and shower water are electrified and even cause electric shock accidents.
Why is it tingling when I touch the shower water
As the weather starts to turn cold, the frequency of use of electric water heaters in homes will increase significantly. The day before yesterday, Mr. Teng, who lives in the suburbs of Shanghai, reported to the quality supervision department that after he bought an electric water heater with a "qualification certificate", he asked colleagues to install it. When I turned on the faucet shower that night, I suddenly felt that the shower water was a little tingling. Calling a regular electrician to check it out, the wire connecting the electric water heater was not "grounded". The electrician said that fortunately it was found in time, otherwise the consequences would be unimaginable.
According to statistics from authoritative organizations, since 1997, there have been more than 1,000 injuries to electric water heaters in China, and about 5,900 consumer complaints. However, after testing by the quality inspection agency, most of the wounded electric water heaters meet the national standards and are qualified products. According to the current national standard for electric water heaters, the manuals all state the warning "It is strictly forbidden to use the ground wire when it is unreliable." However, this has not attracted the general attention of most consumers.
Experts said that the safety of electric water heaters involves every part of the entire product, such as the inner tank, heating pipes, thermostats, etc., and most of the accidents caused by leakage of electricity are caused by hidden dangers in the electricity environment. For example, ground wire failure, use of low-quality sockets, wrong wiring during installation, etc., so that the water flowing through the electric water heater, non-insulator parts are charged, and even cause electric shock accidents.
More than 70% of households have hidden dangers
Starting from March 15 this year, the China Consumers Association, the National Standardization Committee, the China Household Appliances Research Institute and the China Household Appliances Industry Association have launched a sample survey of the residential electricity environment in more than 20 cities, including East China. Eleven items, such as whether the "grounding" is good, whether the water pipe and outlet water are live, whether the live line and neutral line are wrongly connected.
The "2005 Survey Report on China's Household Electricity Environment" recently published shows that the domestic electricity environment in China is shocking. Unreliable grounding and "grounding" have become the most common problems.
Among the 2386 households surveyed, only 576 households have a safe and qualified electricity environment, and the remaining 1810 households have various levels of hidden safety hazards, with a proportion as high as 75.9%. Among them, 1267 households have no ground wire or "ground" is unreliable, accounting for 53% of the total surveyed.
The survey also showed that with the increase in the service life of buildings, more than 33.2% of household circuits have been aging. In terms of line installation, 32.9% of household fire and ground lines do not meet the requirements of national standards, and the layout of 30.4% of household lines, switches, and sockets is unreasonable. In addition, 40.7% of household kitchen appliances do not have moisture-proof and waterproof functions.
Experts in the quality supervision department analyzed that these environmental safety issues have become the fuse of electric water heater accidents, and it is imminent to pay attention to the electrical safety of household appliances, especially electric water heaters.

Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau issued six "must"
â– Consumers must ask professional installers to install electric water heaters.
â– Be sure to check whether the circuit is reliably grounded before installation, and select the appropriate socket and power cord according to the power of the electric water heater.
â– Be sure to install the electric water heater on a solid wall, the best place to install is where it is easy to maintain and maintain.
â– When installing the power outlet of the electric water heater, you must consider keeping it as far away from the water heater as possible, preferably more than 2 meters, to avoid the electric shock caused by the water sprayed by the shower.
â– There must be vents or exhaust fans installed indoors. If it is installed outdoors, it must be protected from rain.
â– After the installation is completed, the installer must be asked to perform relevant safety tests and operation demonstrations, and explain how to use it.
