You are likely to have heard of the extraordinary properties of graphene, such as excellent strength, excellent electrical properties, thermal conductivity and electron mobility. These different characteristics have made graphene have a huge impact on touch screens, semiconductors, solar cells, supercapacitors and other fields.
However, high-performance graphene can be produced only when the raw materials are pure. Producing high-performance graphene is very challenging, but the Argonne National Laboratory, part of the US Department of Energy, has found a possible solution – ultra-nano-diamond.
Anirudha Sumant is a materials scientist leading the Argonne National Laboratory. They are currently collaborating with the University of California, Riverside, using super nanodiamonds (UNCD) as the base for the synthesis of graphene. This synthesis ensures that most of the impurities are removed.
Diana Berman, the first author of the article, said: "When I first saw it through a scanning electron microscope, I was surprised to find that the graphene produced in this way was beautiful and beautiful. I have been making graphene in different ways, but I have never seen such a good shape."
This synthesis allows for the synthesis of graphene at lower temperatures, saving more time than the way in which graphene is synthesized using silicon carbide, which is now widely used. The price of three or four layers of silicon carbide crystals is close to $1,200, while the cost of UNCD is less than $500, which is more economical.
The team members of Argonne Labs stated that they had obtained a total of three patents. They are currently working with the Swedish Institute of Space Physics and the European Space Agency to develop a graphene-coated probe for the Jupiter Ice Moon Detector (JUICE) program. The Argonne Labs research team is currently developing graphene probes for biosensors for researchers at the University of North Carolina.
Researchers have now published research results in Nature Communications. Of course, laboratory researchers will continue to optimize the manufacturing of this graphene.
Previously, Japanese researchers have improved the way in which graphene is made from silicon carbide. Although higher quality graphene can be obtained, there is no way to reduce the cost.
