Supermarket visit: genetically modified markers need to be standardized

According to Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, September 10th, China has implemented a strict labeling system for genetically modified agricultural products (000061, stocks), requiring that genetically modified organisms listed in the catalog of genetically modified markers and sold on the market be identified. However, the reporters found in several large supermarkets in Beijing and Tianjin that co-existence of genetically modified markers and reversed markers, and some of the genetically modified foods were “unwilling to identify”, and that the logo of genetically modified foods in supermarkets still exists as a “fish that escapes the net”. Experts suggest that China's genetically modified identification system still needs to be standardized and improved.

In the edible oil commodity area of the supermarket, the reporter saw that some well-known brands of edible oils indicated in the ingredient list whether to use genetically modified crops as raw materials. In particular, products that use non-GM crops as raw materials, the word “non-transgenic” stand out on the packaging of goods.

Soybean products are the focus of consumer concern. The reporter saw at the supermarket that two brands of soy milk, tofu and bean sprouts products were marked with non-genetically modified soybeans; Yashili and Yonghe branded soy and milk powder were all marked “non-transgenic” on the packaging; Canned soybeans in tomato sauce do not indicate whether the soybeans and tomatoes used are genetically modified raw materials.

When the reporter visited the supermarket on the spot, he learned that almost none of the fresh produce in the supermarket was labeled with genetically modified food information.

“Food safety needs to be seamless.” Qiu Baochang, an expert advisor and lawyer of the China Consumers Association, said that the Ministry of Agriculture has established departmental regulations, but the logo has appeared in the circulation field, and it has become a question of who will enforce the law. Therefore, there is a need for unified law enforcement for food safety, labeling, and standard setting. In the same way, food recalls, food supervision, and food safety standards should also be implemented by the state in the form of laws and regulations. These regulations must be operable, and the formulation departments and executive departments should coordinate and unify, and they should no longer be departmental rules of “one paragraph of each pipe”.
